Overview
If you’re like most people, you’re probably thinking to yourself, “How in the world can anyone drink that much water each day, and why in the world would you want to do that?”
That’s exactly what I thought, and what we are going to discover in this brief article.
A long time ago I switched to water as my primary drink of choice because I knew it was better for me, health-wise. I thought I drank tons of water each day, so I assumed I was good. After all, I drink water for most meals. I drink water during the day, and I also drink hot green tea throughout the day most days. So, I assumed I was doing great.
Last spring during an amazing trip to Australia, I discovered that, in my experience, many Australians are much more into natural health protocols than many Americans. A great Aussie friend of mine told me about functional Chiropractors. I have used regular chiropractors for decades and love them. I had never heard about functional chiropractors before so I was super intrigued about all the benefits my friend told me they can offer. When I returned to the States, I was able to locate one close to me.
The doctor could not have been any more helpful and truly interested in my overall health. He was fantastic! We went through a long series of resistance tests by him using pressure against my arms and legs at various angles and positions. It was shocking how revealing the tests were. There was no uncertainty with them. It was very black and white in the results and simply amazing. I never cease to marvel at how amazing the human body is and how it works.
At one point he had me walk into the hallway with him and he performed a certain resistance test on my arm. Then he had me sprint up two flights of steps and back again. He then repeated the same resistance test.
Next, he gave me a very small sip of water and had me sprint up and down the stairs again, and then repeated the resistance test. He immediately said; “You are not drinking enough water!” I was shocked. I assumed I already drank “tons” of water. Apparently, that was not the case!
His recommendation was to continue drinking the same amount of water and green tea that I usually do each day, and on top of that, drink an additional 64 ounces of water each day. I am always up for doing anything that can improve my health, so I decided to go for it.
I found this much easier to do if you buy a 64oz water jug. It’s healthier to go with glass and not plastic or stainless steel. Yes, there are lots of 64oz water jugs on the market. I had no idea this was a thing! The glass one I purchased comes with a rubber coating on the outside and has a spout, lid, handle, etc. It works great.
Just fill it up with high-quality water each day and keep it with you. It serves as a constant reminder that your goal is to drink the whole thing each day. You will find this much easier than trying to remember to drink eight, 8oz glasses or bottles of water each day.
At first, doing this seemed daunting. Admittedly there have been some days where I got busy, zoned out about it, and forgot to drink any of it, or did not drink the whole bottle. However, after a while you get in the habit of drinking it each day. I can tell you that it makes you feel great. Pro tip: If you like to sleep at night, try and drink most of it before the late afternoon or evening!
For me personally, I simply feel better when I drink the entire 64oz each day. My head feels better, my organs feel better, and my body feels better. It just feels like the way it is supposed to be.
Why is this so beneficial?
The human body is made up of approximately 60% water. Your body is a water-consumption machine. You eliminate water all day long through sweat, urination, bowel movements, and evaporation. Your body water needs to be constantly replenished.
Check out the benefits of simply drinking enough water each day.
Water provides protection for your spinal cord. It also helps to cushion and lubricate your body’s joints as well as regulates your internal body temperature. Sufficient water intake enables our bodies to adequately eliminate waste through perspiration, urination, and defecation. This helps to keep our bodies detoxified, which is so critical these days due to our environment.
Drinking water can actually aid in helping to lose weight. It does this by aiding in the elimination process. Also, many people recommend drinking water an hour or so before meals. The water takes up space in your stomach and gives you a feeling of fullness, which helps in reducing hunger. Often a person may think they are hungry when they are actually thirsty. The next time you feel like reaching for a snack, drink a glass or two of water and see if it helps to curb your appetite.
It is also important to drink water before, during, and after workouts. During workouts, your body sweats out water as well as burns it off. It’s critical for your body’s performance, that you replenish this water. You see how much pro athletes drink during sports events. They know how critical hydration is for peak performance.
Take a look at these additional benefits of staying hydrated.
Your brain is also strongly influenced by how hydrated you are. Some studies show that even mild dehydration can impair many aspects of brain function. If you’ve ever had a dehydration headache, you know how painful they are and how long they take to go away.
Dehydration can also affect mood and concentration. Not drinking enough water can increase the frequency and severity of headaches. It can also be detrimental to your working memory and increase your feelings of anxiety and fatigue. Staying hydrated may also prevent or relieve constipation so your body just functions better.
Staying hydrated can reduce the chances of having kidney stones. If you’ve ever had these, you know how excruciatingly painful these can be.
Here’s a good one, staying hydrated can prevent or reduce the effects of drinking too much alcohol and having hangovers. Alcohol is a diuretic. It causes you to lose more water than you take in. This can lead to dehydration. Dehydration isn’t the main cause of hangovers, but it can cause adverse symptoms like fatigue, headache, thirst, and dry mouth. A good practice is to have a glass of water between each drink and have some water before going to bed.
When you fly, the effects of high altitude, pressure, etc. tend to dehydrate you. It’s always best to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight. It will help you, to a degree, with jet lag and help your body eliminate toxins picked up along the way.
Simply drinking enough water seems to produce miraculous health benefits. This seems like such an easy fix to improve our overall health. Everyone can do this.
The striking thing to me was that very few, if any, doctors whom I have been to over all these years, ever told me, or perhaps more importantly, “sold me”, on the true importance of drinking 64oz of water a day. I am so grateful that this one doctor took the time to convince me to change my habits and simply drink the right amount of water each day.
If you’re not doing it already, give it a try. I think you’ll be really glad you did.
